Sally-Anne Russell Performs With The Adelaide Baroque Orchestra Next Month

Acclaimed mezzo soprano Sally-Anne Russell will join the Adelaide Baroque Orchestra for its second concert for 2022, entitled Jewel of the City: Music of Dresden. The concert will be performed on Sunday 7 August at 3.00pm in Elder Hall, Adelaide. A pre-concert talk by Dr Jan Stockigt takes place from 2.00pm.

Program curator Ben Dollman (on violin) said, 'During the middle of the eighteenth century, the court orchestra of the German city of Dresden was the most famous orchestra in all of Europe. Known for its brilliance and virtuosic performances, it pioneered a new kind of sound from composers within its own ranks, whilst attracting luminaries such as Vivaldi and J.S. Bach to write for it. In this program Adelaide Baroque builds on its highly successful Zelenka project of 2021, recreating the splendour of this orchestra, this time featuring stunning arias from Dresden's 'power couple' - composer Johann Adolf Hasse and his soprano wife Faustina Bordoni - the jewel in Dresden's crown!'

The concert program will include; Antonio Vivaldi - Concerto in F for Violin, 2 Horns, 2 Oboes and Bassoon, RV 568; Johann David Heinichen - Concerto in F for 2 Horns, Flute and Violin, S 234 Arias by Johann Adolf Hasse, Antonio Vivaldi and Nicola Porpora. The concert duration is approximately ninety minutes, including a twenty-minute interval.

Sally-Anne Russell (pictured) is a multi-award-winning mezzo soprano and has performed on the concert platform and operatic stage in twenty-five countries. Her discography includes over 40 CDs and DVDs on the ABC Classic, CHANDOS, MOVE, TOCCATA, NAXOS and DECCA labels, including her solo aria disc Enchanting with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. Sally-Anne's awards include an ARIA for Pergolesi Stabat Mater with Sara Macliver, and nominations for Young Australian of the Year, Young Achiever of the Year, Green Room and Helpmann Awards.

She has over 80 operatic roles in her repertoire and regularly works with all the major opera companies and symphony orchestras in Australia. International highlights include the Spoleto Festival in Italy, Washington National Opera (DC) and Carmel Bach Festival.

This year Sally-Anne will also return to the Melbourne Bach Choir for Bach's St. Matthew Passion, to Sydney Philharmonia for Mozart Requiem, Victorian Opera for Elektra, Adelaide Symphony for Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, Victoria Chorale for Puccini's Gloria, Dido and Aeneas in Sydney and at Albury Chamber Music Festival, and to Melbourne Opera for Die Walküre. She will also make her debut with National Opera, Canberra as Bradamante in Alcina.

Recent projects have included Hermia in Britten A Midsummer Night's Dream for Adelaide Festival, Mahler Das Lied von der Erde for Canberra Festival, Handel Messiah with Melbourne Symphony, and Beethoven: Ah Perfido. Sally-Anne is also co-artistic director for Albury Chamber Music Festival, a member of the Kathaumixw Festival International Artistic Council in Canada and the Belvedere International Singing Competition in Vienna. Sally-Anne is proudly sponsored by the Bee Family Foundation.
