ARABELLAS WALTZ Comes to Norwegian National Ballet This Month

Arabella is a beautiful opera - a romantic comedy, which shimmers with youthful vitality and curious infatuation. It was the last major collaboration between Richard Strauss and Hugo von Hofmannsthal, who at the beginning of the 20th century created immortal works together.

The opera was composed in 1932, but the plot is set in Vienna in 1869, at the time when the Viennese waltz established itself in the important music city. Here the brothers Eduard and Johann Strauss continued the work of their father, Johan Strauss, and wrote a number of popular waltzes, polkas and marches. In this concert you will hear both their brilliant dance music and excerpts from Arabella - which takes place in the Viennese ballrooms.

Under Sound and picture below you can hear both the waltzes and the opera excerpts, so you know what to look forward to!

Brilliant soloists

In the role of Arabella, we hear Marita Sølberg. Her father, Count Waldner is sung by Kurt Rydl, Denise Beck is Arabella's sister Zdenka and Yngve Søberg is Mandryka - one of Arabella's suitors. The musical direction of the concert is by the German conductor Constantin Trinks.

In search of identity - and love

Arabella dreams of the great love, but her parents expect her to marry for money. The aristocratic family is soon bankrupt. When the great love is revealed, identity entanglements lead to the whole thing being put at stake.
