EDINBURGH 2022: Joseph Parsons Q&A

BWW catches up with Joseph Parsons to chat about bringing Equaliser to the 2022 Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Tell us a bit about Equaliser

Equaliser looks at my love of sport as a gay man. It's a show that looks at why sport is brilliant and sometimes absurd with embarrassing stories, lots of energy and lots of fun whilst not shying away from some of the more serious stuff.

Why did you think it was important to tell this story?

I think stand up comedy is a great way of talking about something you're passionate about and maybe bringing an issue or perspective that could be new to someone. Sport at the moment is in a really odd place for the LGBTQ community, with the exciting news of Jake Daniels coming out but on the other side of it, the World Cup is being held in Qatar where it is illegal to be gay.

Why bring it to Edinburgh?

There's no better place to take a show in my opinion. It's one of the best opportunities to perform a show to as many people as possible over a month. It's also a place where so many of your friends are performing so you get to see what they've been working on which is really exciting.

Who would you like to come and see it?

The show is about sport but it's not necessarily just for sports fans. There's a lot of storytelling, silliness and some surprises here and there so it's really for anyone who likes stories, high energy and wants to have a bloody good time.

Do you think you know what to expect from the Fringe?

The Fringe changes every year. I think this year there's going to be a lot of acts up. There's going to be hundreds of brilliant debut shows to enjoy - I know I will be. I also think (and hope) there will be more people visiting the Fringe this year, making up for lost time during the last couple of years.
