Tenor Allan Clayton, who made his acclaimed Met debut in the title role of Brett Dean's Hamlet last season, will headline Britten's haunting masterpiece Peter Grimes when the work returns to the Met for eight performances October 16-November 12, 2022.

Clayton was hailed for embodying one of opera's most demanding roles in performances of Peter Grimes last spring at the Royal Opera House in London. In a work that probes the nature of guilt and judgment, he plays an enigmatic fisherman accused in the deaths of two apprentices. Britten realistically portrays the mistrust, misunderstandings, and dark secrets that lurk within even the closest communities.

Clayton teams up once again with Maestro Nicholas Carter, who led the powerful and intricate score of Hamlet. The cast includes soprano Nicole Car, who takes on the role of the kindhearted Ellen Orford for the first time on stage, and bass-baritone Adam Plachetka as the retired captain Balstrode. Soprano Laura Wilde sings Ellen Orford on November 2.

This is the first revival of John Doyle's chilling production, which premiered in 2008. Doyle's setting of Peter Grimes was inspired by his hometown of Hastings, a small fishing town on the southern coast of England.
