Ars Lyrica Houston's Holiday Concert Explores The Rich Musical Legacy Of The Virgin Mary

On Tuesday, December 13th at 7:30 pm, Ars Lyrica Houston - an ensemble specializing in music of the 17th and 18th centuries - presents a special holiday concert titled A Marian Feast in the beautiful and resonant St. Philip Presbyterian Church.

Six exceptional singers and six leading Baroque instrumentalists will perform from the choir loft, creating a divine listening experience as music floats down from above and envelopes the audience.

A Marian Feast explores the rich musical legacy of the Virgin Mary with a mix of instrumental chamber music, a cappella ensemble singing, and solo organ. Artistic Director Matthew Dirst, who will be conducting the concert, has curated a program which spans nearly six hundred years. Medieval polyphony is set alongside contemporary carols and anthems, including Monteverdi's sumptuous Magnificat a 6, Isabella Leonarda's Sonata nona, and Charpentier's Alma Redemptoris Mater, among other exquisite works.

For many listeners, the music will be familiar and moving. But even those less acquainted with the repertoire will be immersed in the pure and expressive music. With a short but engaging program lasting just over an hour, this family-friendly concert will reach and satisfy listeners of all backgrounds. All concertgoers will be invited to a reception afterwards in the church, with the opportunity to mingle with Ars Lyrica artists while enjoying light bites and drinks.
