The Neighbors Receive Support From The NYSCA-A.R.T./New York Creative Opportunity Fund

What Will the Neighbors Say? is thrilled to announce they have been awarded support from the NYSCA-A.R.T./New York Creative Opportunity Fund (A Statewide Theatre Regrant Program) for their upcoming eighth season. The funding will support general operating expenses, bolster administrative and artist pay and guarantee continued safety in the Neighbors' spaces. The New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) and the Alliance of Resident Theatres/New York (A.R.T./New York) recently announced the 91 recipients of the 2023 NYSCA-A.R.T./New York Creative Opportunity Fund (A Statewide Theatre Regrant Program). Through this regrant program, $340,000 was distributed via flexible, general operating support grants to small theatres across New York State.

Recipients of the Creative Opportunity Fund were determined by a panel of theatre-makers from New York City and across the state. Nominations for panelists were solicited from the community, and 20 panelists met virtually to score and allocate funding for the 113 applicants. A.R.T./New York is thrilled to partner for the sixth year with the New York State Council on the Arts to continue to build and strengthen the theatrical field statewide.

"A.R.T./New York's strategic investments in nonprofit theatres are critical to the growth and viability of New York's arts and culture sector," said NYSCA Executive Director Mara Manus. "NYSCA is thrilled to work with A.R.T./New York at this critical juncture in our sector's recovery to ensure that these vital dollars reach theatres statewide. On behalf of the entire NYSCA Team, congratulations to all 91 awardees!"

Co-Artistic Director Sam Hood Adrain stated "We are so proud to have such a strong, long-term relationship with both NYSCA and A.R.T./New York, and are so grateful for this funding support." "This funding will help the Neighbors continue to both grow and stabilize, and the funds will be focussed on artist pay and safety in our spaces," added Clements.

What Will the Neighbors Say? is an investigative theatre company that provokes questions through untold stories. Led by a collaborative cohort of International Artists, the Neighbors present overlooked social, cultural and historical narratives that challenge the audience to reflect on the current moment. Through a combination of original plays, arts education workshops and dynamic community gatherings, the troupe incites rowdy and rigorous debate at the theatre and throughout the Neighborhood.
