After the rock musical NEXT TO NORMAL, JAKARTA YOUTH FOR PERFORMING ARTS (JYPA) set their eyes on the high school horror CARRIE: THE MUSICAL. CARRIE will run on 17 and 18 January, 2020 at GEDUNG KESENIAN JAKARTA theater. The production is licensed through Rodgers & Hammerstein Theatricals.

CARRIE has a reputation of being Broadway's most famous flop (its infamy only rivaled by the legendary THE MOOSE MURDERS). The musical, adapted from Stephen King's novel of the same name, debuted in 1988 and closed on Broadway after 16 previews, 5 performances, and mixed reviews. However, the show gained new life after the 2012 reinvention (by the original team of Lawrence D. Cohen (book), Dean Pitchford (lyrics), and Michael Gore (music)).

The revamped production still follows the story of Carrie White, the teenage daughter of Margaret -- a tyrannical, hyper-religious mother. Due to her naiveté, Carrie faces rampant bullying at school, culminating in a particularly vicious prank at the prom night. Her life is changed forever as her supernatural power awakens and she seeks revenge on her bullies.

Margaret's destructive behavior was, in turn, the result of a traumatic marital life. Through Carrie, JYPA looks to start dialogue about the taboo topic of domestic and sexual violence. JYPA is collaborating with APIK Jakarta, an organization assisting abuse survivors through law advocacy.

The main role of Carrie White will be played by Cesila Fischer. The role of Carrie's mother, Margaret White, will be played by Gabriela Sally. Other actors in the cast include Shanna Miaziza, Shaumozza Desra, Daniel Green, Taj Dharmadji, William Menayang, Gabriella Sally, Adjani Zahra, Chris Gonzales, Joseph Jefferson, Juba Harmoun, Muhammad Rafly, Selma Harmoun, Tesa Wibowo, Moshe Menayang, Chloe Menayang, Michelle Karla, and NEXT TO NORMAL returnee Mohammed Nabil Harmoun.

CARRIE will be co-directed by Aqsa Suryana and Aisha Servia and produced by Shaumozza Desra.
