BRIC Announces Exhibition Programming For DEATH BECOMES HER

BRIC and The Green-Wood Cemetery are pleased to announce the public programming that will accompany Death Becomes Her. This suite of programming will encourage unconventional conversation and personal inquiry around death. Participating artists Gyun Hur, McKendree Key, Heidi Lau, Freya Powell, and Keisha Scarville will examine loss as a catalyst for self-discovery, its cultural and social associations, and the politics of death and dying.

Accompanying the exhibition are artist-led conversations, family workshops, and immersive performances. The diverse programming will serve to further unpack the exhibition's visual rhetoric of how the departed are remembered. Events are free unless otherwise noted.

BRIC House, 647 Fulton StreetIn this performance series, artist Gyun Hur stays present with her installation in Death Becomes Her over the course of seven days, deconstructing silk flowers and placing them and herself on the existing work. Through gestures of repetition, Hur meditates on loss, trauma, assimilation, and redemption. Her actions mimic the tending of a garden, which in turn relates to the tending of ourselves in life and death. The performance series will slowly change her work throughout the run of the exhibition. More information available here.

5 x 10 @ The Catacombs is a series of three intimate gatherings in the Catacombs of Green-Wood featuring artists McKendree Key, Kim Charles Kay, and Leigh Davis who will bring strangers together in an artist-led discussion about death, dying, and the hereafter. Only Remains Remain

Only Remains Remain is an immersive, 45-minute performance by Freya Powell addressing a contemporary tragedy through the characters of Antigone. The performance uses the structure of a Sophoclean chorus to communicate an elegy for the hundreds of unidentified migrants that were buried in mass graves in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Brooks County, Texas. The chorus of women seeks to recognize the lives of those laid to rest as unknowns by addressing the silence of their burial and our complicity and grief in the process.
