Target Margin Theater in Association with Meta-Phys Ed Presents THE TALMUD

Target Margin Theater in association with META-PHYS ED are announcing the upoming production of THE TALMUD, directed by Jesse Freedman. THE TALMUD will play a three-week limited engagement at THE DOXSEE @ Target Margin Theater (232 52nd Street, Sunset Park, Brooklyn).

Performances begin Thursday, September 12 and continue through Saturday, September 28. Opening Night is Saturday, September 14 (8 p.m.). Press performances are Thursday, September 12; Friday, September 13, and Saturday, September 14 (and any subsequent performance).

Based on The Talmud and Kung-Fu films, Meta-Phys Ed.'s THE TALMUD is a genre-bending performance that draws from a century of Chinese martial arts cinema, and, a single chapter of The Talmud-a 5th century text of Rabbinic Judaism. Featuring innovative production design, live Kung-Fu movie cinematography and choreographed Talmudic debate, THE TALMUD is a confounding exploration of sacred wisdom and how ancient traditions survive the dangerous journey across generations.

The production stars Lucie Allouche, Abrielle Kuo, Eli M. Schoenfeld, Jae Woo and Lu Liu on Pipa.

The production features compostions by Avi Amon, pipa compostions by Lu Liu & Avi Amon, scenic design by Kyu Shin, projection design by Lacey Erb, costume design by Karen Boyer, and lighting design by Yi-Chung Chen. Eamon Goodman is the sound designer, Gil Sperling designed the original video concepts and Joanne Au is the stage manager.

The Talmud was developed thru the Target Margin Artist Residence, and the Exponential Theater Festival.

Meta-Phys Ed. creates original performance works that explore the relationship between religion, spirituality, culture and politics; often drawing inspiration from sacred and classical text. Their work draws from many different performance disciplines including theater, dance and performance art.

Meta-Phys Ed. was founded in 2011 by Jesse Freedman and Rabbi Bronwen Mullin, and it continues to emanate from their shared interest in ancient Jewish text, contemporary forms, and experimental process.

Now under the Artistic Direction of Jesse Freedman, Meta-Phys Ed. is a diverse collaboration of artists and intellectuals. They have presented work at The New Ohio Theater, La MaMa, The Exponential Festival, The NY Fringe, IRT Theater, The Brick, Dixon Place and The Doxsee @ Target Margin Theater. They are recipients of the IRT 3B Development Residency, and a Target Margin Theater Artist Residency.

Target Margin Theater is an OBIE Award-winning company newly based in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. 'Difference' is their generative principle and since 1991 they have changed the cultural landscape of New York through the creation of innovative productions of classic plays, opera, literature and historical sources.

TARGET MARGIN PRESENTS provides performance space to artists who share the Company's aesthetic and embrace its mission, but have not yet built substantial institutional support.
