Super Moon Over Manhattan

Photographer and picture editor Gary Hershorn started his 40-year career at United Press International in Toronto, before joining Reuters in 1985. He led major event coverage of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center, Hurricane Katrina, the Haiti Earthquake, along with numerous sporting championships and entertainment events, including 17 Olympic Games, 24 Masters Golf tournaments, 24 Academy Awards, along with various Super Bowls, World Series, Stanley Cups, World Cups of Soccer, US Opens in tennis and gold, Wimbledon, and more.

"In the summer of 2011 as the 10th anniversary of the 9/11
approached, I began what has turned out to be a long term photographic project documenting the changing skyline of New York City. It was a summer filled with walking up and down the Hudson River in New Jersey looking for ways to show off to the world how New York City was finally getting back to being the great world city it always was," says Hershorn.

"After (spending years photographing) full moons over New York City, it was a natural to then turn my camera towards the sun. Many mornings have been spent in all sorts of weather, watching the sun rising up behind New York City's amazing skyline; just as many evenings have been spent documenting a city awash in orange, red, pink or purple colors, as the sun drops out of the sky behind the Statue of Liberty, or Brooklyn Bridge," he adds.

Parks and People

A photographer and editor for more than 30 years, work by Adam Stoltman has appeared in Newsweek, LIFE, Sports Illustrated, The New York Times Sunday Magazine, New York, Stern, Paris Match, and numerous other publications. He has covered 12 Olympic Games, and most major sporting events, some as a photographer and others as an editor. Parks and People is a photographic exploration of New Yorker's relationship with their parks, green spaces and playgrounds. With 1,700 parks covering more than 30,000 acres, it is as much a social ecosystem as a natural one.

"The ways in which New Yorkers interact with, utilize and enjoy these parks each day, are simple, complex, highly personalized, and often magical and transformative," says Stoltman. "They also reveal a fundamental truth: The resiliency and balance of our city is tied to our parks and green spaces. Thriving public spaces are essential for community engagement, promoting a culture of community and sustaining personal wellbeing. In a city as complex, diverse and intense as New York, parks are the silent soothers of the urban experience, allowing space for recreation and reflection and a democratic outlet for people of all stripes."

Over more than four years, Stoltman has and continues to photograph representative locations across all five boroughs, resulting in a body of work which reflects NYC's ecological and cultural diversity.
