Citadel Theatre Announces Season Re-Planning And More Updates

"It's been nearly a month since we shut down theatre operations to ensure we were doing our part to protect the community, our patrons and our staff from the ravages of COVID19. We have been humbled by the kindness and support of our subscribers, funders, government representatives and sponsors. They have all reached out with offers of help and encouragement. In spite of the uncertainty of when we will be able to gather again for live performances we have endeavored to continue the artful conversation with our patrons, artists and supporters.

We're in the third week of the Citadel Stuck-in-the-House Series, and the new initiative is off to a great start. Our first set of videos has seen over 70,000 views and counting, and we have many more Edmonton talents lined up for the coming weeks. So far, our generous donors have raised nearly $3,000 for the participating artists. We continue to give our thanks to the Edmonton Community Foundation for their generous support that allows us to provide compensation to artists during this period of closures.

Though our online programming has been a center of attention, work is still constantly ongoing behind-the-scenes to make sure Edmonton has fantastic live theatre to come back to as soon as possible and we continue to plan for the various timelines and contingencies that may present themselves.

"It is a challenge planning for the future when we don't know yet when our theatres will be able to open again. We have many different plans in place depending on when we are able to start performances again," says Artistic Director Daryl Cloran. "However, we do know that we're committed to bringing audiences the world premiere of The Garneau Block and the North American premiere of Peter Pan Goes Wrong as soon as we are able to. We're working with our staff, artists, and co-producing partners to ensure we're ready to produce a season of fantastic performances that we can all come together to enjoy as soon as it is safe to do so."

At this time, we have the following programming updates to share:

• Our summer production of ELVIS: The Musical, has been postponed until July 2021. While we're disappointed to postpone the production, we look forward to sharing this fantastic musical with audiences in summer 2021.
• Our priority is bringing Citadel audiences our productions of The Garneau Block and Peter Pan Goes Wrong as soon as we are able to open our theatres again. As we get a better sense of when we may be able to open again, we'll reach out to patrons to let them know the new performance dates.
• We are working to reschedule musical talents Audrey Ochoa & Friends and The Filharmonic for next season.
• Unfortunately, after examining all schedule and availability options with the Punctuate! Theatre team, the decision has been made to cancel the production of After the Fire. While we are disappointed not to be able to present this production, we look forward to sharing Punctuate! Theatre's production of Bears by Matthew MacKenzie as part of our Highwire Series in January 2021.
• We have decided to cancel our 2020 COLLIDER Festival of new work. We will shift our attention to the 2021 COLLIDER Festival, planned for March 2021.

We will adjust our plans based on the most recent information that becomes available. We are continuing to offer subscriptions for the 2020/21 season and in fact, the well-being of our theatre relies on our community investing in the future of live performances at the theatre. In spite of changing circumstances, we are committed to supporting our team in getting back to work and offering our patrons high quality and innovative productions, built here in Edmonton.
