Manila, Philippines--Yasuyo (Delphine Buencamino), visits her husband, Tatsuya (Brian Sy), in prison. He has been in prison four times for theft.

"Why do you steal?" Yasuyo asks. Her husband's rather weak answers fail to convince.

Left alone with a five-year-old son, Yasuyo barely manages to make ends meet, works in a supermarket, and gets special attention from the store manager.

She looks at her husband across the prison's glass wall and thinks, "Shall I break up with him or not?"

Life is disgusting and Yasuyo has had more than her fill of it already.

Deftly directed by Ricky Abad for Arete Production, "If He Doesn't See Your Face," written by acclaimed Japanese playwright Suzue Toshiro, is a brisk, provocative play, which places front and center the author's signature drama: the exchange of "sensitive but increasingly erratic conversations that emerge from the mindset of profoundly introverted contemporary Japanese." - Performing Arts Network Japan.

Production and sound design are by Tata Tuviera; technical direction and lighting design, D. Cortezano.

The play runs from August 2-4, 2019, at the Doreen Black Box, Arete complex, at the Ateneo de Manila University.
